Stop the Noise
The purpose of this quality improvement project was to reduce the number of unnecessary ECG and pulse oximetry alarms in adult medical cardio-vascular care unit. The study question:- Can a bundled approach of interventions decrease the number of nuisance ECG alarm signals?
- Eliminating duplicative alarms
- Customising alarms
- Changing electrocardiography electrodes daily
- Standardising skin preparation
- Using disposable electrocardiography leads
These measures decreased the number of alarm signals by 88.5%
